Your ASU GPA is your total grade points divided by your total graded units. Only grades A+ through D and E count; P, W, I, and other non-graded marks carry no grade points. Even though A+ is worth 4.33, the cumulative GPA shown on your transcript is capped at 4.00.
Frequently asked questions
Does ASU use plus and minus grades?+
Yes. Arizona State University uses a plus/minus 4.0 scale, but with a simplified lower range: A+ = 4.33, A = 4.0, A- = 3.67, B+ = 3.33, B = 3.0, B- = 2.67, C+ = 2.33, C = 2.0, then D = 1.0 and E = 0.0. There is no C-, D+, or D- at ASU.
Is an A+ worth 4.33 at ASU?+
Yes, an A+ carries 4.33 grade points at ASU. However, the official cumulative GPA is capped at 4.00 — so even straight A+ grades show a 4.00 cumulative GPA on your transcript.
What is a failing grade at ASU?+
ASU uses E (not F) for a failing grade, worth 0.0 grade points. Grades like I (incomplete), P (pass), W (withdrawal), X, Y, and Z do not carry grade points.
How is ASU GPA calculated?+
Divide your total grade points by your total graded units (credit hours). Graded units are courses graded A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D, or E. Other grades (P, W, I, etc.) add no grade points.
Does ASU have C- or D+ grades?+
No. ASU's scale goes straight from C (2.0) to D (1.0) — there is no C-, D+, or D-. This is different from schools like UF or Purdue, which use the full plus/minus range.
What GPA do I need to stay in good standing at ASU?+
Academic standing rules (probation, disqualification) depend on your cumulative ASU GPA and vary by college. Check the ASU catalog or your academic advisor for the specific thresholds.
