UCAS Tariff points for A-Levels
| Grade | A-Level points | AS-Level points |
|---|---|---|
| A* | 56 | — |
| A | 48 | 20 |
| B | 40 | 16 |
| C | 32 | 12 |
| D | 24 | 10 |
| E | 16 | 6 |
How UCAS Tariff works
The UCAS Tariff converts your qualifications into a standardised point score. Each qualification and grade has a fixed point value. Universities use these to set entry requirements like:
- "120 points from 3 A-Levels" — exactly BBB (40+40+40), or any combination totalling 120
- "112 points including two A-Levels" — must include specific subjects
- "ABB or equivalent" — some universities give both grade and point ranges
The Tariff was revised in 2017 — point values became roughly a third of the old numbers (an A went from 120 to 48). If you're reading older advice online mentioning "280 points for AAB", that's the pre-2017 tariff. Current offers use the smaller numbers. A-Levels have the highest point values per qualification, followed by BTECs, Cambridge Technicals, and T Levels.
What different point totals mean
| Total points | Typical A-Level grades | What's achievable |
|---|---|---|
| 144–168 | AAA–A*A*A* | Oxbridge equivalents, Medicine, competitive Russell Group |
| 128–136 | ABB–AAB | Russell Group, competitive courses |
| 112–120 | BBC–BBB | Most mid-range universities |
| 88–96 | CCD–CCC | Less competitive courses |
| 48–80 | CDD–DDD | Foundation courses, clearing |

Frequently asked questions
What are UCAS Tariff points?+
UCAS Tariff points are a numerical score system used by UK universities to standardise different qualifications. Each qualification and grade has a fixed point value under the current (2017+) tariff. For example, an A-Level grade A is worth 48 points. Universities use these to set entry requirements like '120 points from 3 A-Levels' (which equals BBB).
How many UCAS points does an A* give?+
An A* at A-Level is worth 56 UCAS Tariff points under the current tariff (revised in 2017). A = 48, B = 40, C = 32, D = 24, and E = 16 points. If you see much larger numbers like 140 or 120 for an A, that's the old pre-2017 tariff — universities now use the new, smaller numbers.
How many UCAS points do I need for university?+
It depends on the university and course. Less competitive courses ask for 64–96 points (roughly CCD–CCC). Mid-range universities typically ask for 104–128 points (BCC–ABB). Russell Group universities often ask for 128–144+ points (ABB–AAA). Oxbridge and medical schools usually specify grades (A*AA) rather than points.
Do AS Levels count toward UCAS points?+
Yes, but only as standalone qualifications. Since 2015 in England, AS Levels no longer count toward the final A-Level grade. They are separate qualifications worth roughly 40% of an A-Level: AS grade A = 20 points, B = 16, C = 12, D = 10, E = 6. You cannot combine AS and A-Level points in the same subject.
Can I combine different qualifications for UCAS points?+
Yes. UCAS accepts points from A-Levels, AS Levels, BTECs, Cambridge Technicals, T Levels, and other qualifications. Each has its own Tariff table. This calculator covers A-Levels and AS Levels — for other qualifications, check the official UCAS Tariff tables.
What is the maximum UCAS points from A-Levels?+
The maximum from 3 A-Levels is 168 points (3 A*). With 4 A-Levels, the maximum is 224 points. Some students take 4 or 5 A-Levels, but most universities make offers based on 3 A-Levels.
Do universities still use UCAS points in 2026?+
Yes, many UK universities still use UCAS Tariff points in their entry requirements, though some have moved to grade-based offers (e.g., 'ABB'). Always check the specific entry requirements on the university's course page — they may use points, grades, or both.
How do I check my UCAS points?+
Use this calculator! Add each A-Level subject and its grade, and the total points will update automatically. You can also check the official UCAS Tariff tables on the UCAS website for other qualifications like BTECs or T Levels.
