About the Ohio State GPA Scale
Ohio State University uses a 4.0 GPA scale with standard +/- grades, but with two distinctive quirks: no A+ (the highest grade is A at 4.0) and no D- (the lowest passing grade is D at 1.0). Most notably, Ohio State uses E for failing grades, not F — a convention unique among major US universities.
The passing grade threshold is D (1.0), but many degree programs require C- or better in major-specific courses. Ohio State also uses the Grade Forgiveness policy, allowing you to repeat a course and have the newer grade replace the old one in GPA calculations (both stay on the transcript). Compare with the standard US system on our US grading guide.

How Ohio State GPA is calculated
OSU GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade points. The formula is:
GPA = Sigma (grade points x credit hours) / Sigma credit hours attempted
Each course contributes grade points x credit hours. A 3-credit course graded B+ contributes 9.9 quality points. Ohio State does not weight GPA by course difficulty. Under the Grade Forgiveness policy, when you repeat a course only the new grade counts in your GPA (both grades stay on the transcript).
