Target GPA Calculator
Two questions, one tool — "what GPA do I need this term?" or"what will my GPA be after this term?". Solve either direction in seconds on a 4.0 or 5.0 scale.
Plan your semester
Forward = solve for the GPA you need. Reverse = solve for the GPA you'll end up with.
GPA = Σ(GPA × credits) ÷ Σ credits). The calculator solves this equation for whichever variable you don't know.The math, step by step
Forward — solve for required term GPA
Let C₁ = credits so far, g₁ = current GPA,C₂ = upcoming credits, g₂ = required term GPA,G = target cumulative GPA. Then:
g₂ = (G × (C₁ + C₂) − g₁ × C₁) ÷ C₂
Example: 3.2 over 60 credits, target 3.5, taking 15 more credits →(3.5 × 75 − 3.2 × 60) ÷ 15 = (262.5 − 192) ÷ 15 = 4.70. Out of reach — the calculator will show the highest GPA you can finish with instead.
Reverse — solve for new cumulative GPA
Same variables, solve for G instead:
G = (g₁ × C₁ + g₂ × C₂) ÷ (C₁ + C₂)
Example: 3.2 over 60 credits, plus 3.8 over 15 credits →(3.2 × 60 + 3.8 × 15) ÷ 75 = (192 + 57) ÷ 75 = 3.32. You finish with a 3.32 cumulative — up 0.12 from where you started.
Frequently asked questions
What GPA do I need this semester to reach my target?+
Use the formula: required term GPA = (target × total credits − current GPA × credits so far) ÷ upcoming credits. For example, with a current 3.2 over 60 credits, a target of 3.5 over a planned 90 credits total: (3.5 × 90 − 3.2 × 60) ÷ 30 = (315 − 192) ÷ 30 = 4.10. Since 4.10 is impossible on a 4.0 scale, your target is mathematically out of reach — but the calculator will also show the highest GPA you can still finish with.
How do I calculate the GPA needed for my goal?+
It's a weighted average problem. Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of every course you've taken. If you know how many credits are behind you, how many are coming up, and where you want to end up, you can solve backward for the GPA you need this term — that's exactly what this calculator does.
What if the required GPA is higher than 4.0?+
If the required term GPA exceeds your scale's maximum (4.0 or 5.0 weighted), the target is mathematically out of reach this semester — even a perfect term won't get you there. The calculator shows the maximum cumulative GPA you can still finish with so you can set a more realistic goal.
Can I calculate my final cumulative GPA after this semester?+
Yes — switch to Reverse Lookup mode. Enter your current GPA + credits so far, the GPA you expect this term + the term's credits, and the calculator projects your cumulative GPA at the end of the semester, with a delta arrow showing how much it moves up or down versus your current standing.
Does the calculator work on a 5.0 scale?+
Yes. Switch the scale toggle to 5.0 (used by some weighted high school systems and a handful of universities). The formulas are identical — the only thing that changes is the maximum GPA value used in the boundary checks.
How do I raise my cumulative GPA?+
The fastest way is to ace high-credit courses (they move the weighted average more). Retake any course you did poorly in if your school allows grade replacement, drop unnecessary F/W grades from transcripts where possible, and aim for steady B+/A- terms rather than chasing one giant semester.
