About the UCLA GPA Scale
The University of California system uses a 4.0 GPA scale with plus/minus grades in 0.3-point increments. The most distinctive feature: A+ counts the same as A — both are worth 4.0 grade points per unit. This is different from schools like Michigan State or UBC where A+ is worth 4.33.
Grades below 0.7 (D-) are failing. D- (0.7) is the lowest passing grade. Grades like P, NP, S, U, I, and IP carry no grade points and are excluded from your GPA.
| Letter Grade | Grade Points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 | Same as A (transcript distinction only) |
| A | 4.0 | |
| A- | 3.7 | |
| B+ | 3.3 | |
| B | 3.0 | |
| B- | 2.7 | |
| C+ | 2.3 | |
| C | 2.0 | |
| C- | 1.7 | |
| D+ | 1.3 | |
| D | 1.0 | |
| D- | 0.7 | Lowest passing grade |
| F | 0.0 | Failure |
How UCLA GPA is calculated
UCLA calculates GPA as the credit-weighted average of your grade points:
GPA = sum of (grade points × units) ÷ total units attempted
Only courses with letter grades (A through F) are included. Pass/No-Pass, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, Incomplete, and In-Progress grades carry no grade points and are excluded.
