Indiana University GPA Calculator
Calculate your IU GPA on the official 4.0 scale. Full plus/minus in 0.3-point steps; A+ = A = 4.0 (no 4.33 boost). D− (0.7) is the minimum passing grade. IU calls it Credit Points ÷ GPA Hours.

About the IU GPA Scale
Indiana University (IU) uses a 4.0 GPA scale with full plus/minus grading in 0.3-point increments. The full scale runs from A+/A (4.0) down to D− (0.7), with F at 0.0. Like most US universities, IU does not award extra points for A+ — it's a transcript notation only.
IU's transcript terminology is slightly different: instead of "quality points," IU calls them Credit Points, and the denominator is GPA Hours. The math is identical to other US schools — just different labels. See our US grading guide for the general system.
| Letter Grade | Credit Points | Typical Mark Range |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 | 97–100 |
| A | 4.0 | 93–96 |
| A− | 3.7 | 90–92 |
| B+ | 3.3 | 87–89 |
| B | 3.0 | 83–86 |
| B− | 2.7 | 80–82 |
| C+ | 2.3 | 77–79 |
| C | 2.0 | 73–76 |
| C− | 1.7 | 70–72 |
| D+ | 1.3 | 67–69 |
| D | 1.0 | 63–66 |
| D− | 0.7 | 60–62 |
| F | 0.0 | 0–59 |

How IU GPA is calculated
IU uses IU's terms, but the math is the standard credit-weighted average:
Semester GPA = Σ (Credit Points × GPA Hours) ÷ Σ GPA Hours
Each course contributes Credit Points × GPA Hours. The semester GPA uses only that term's courses; the cumulative GPA includes all IU graded coursework. S/F (Satisfactory/Fail) courses add GPA hours only if you receive an F — an S is excluded entirely. Transfer credits are recorded on your transcript but do not count toward IU's cumulative GPA.
IU academic standing & honors
IU's academic standing is based on cumulative GPA:
- Dean's List — 3.7+ semester GPA with 12+ graded credit hours
- Graduation with Distinction — 3.5–3.69 cumulative GPA
- Graduation with High Distinction — 3.7–3.89 cumulative GPA
- Graduation with Highest Distinction — 3.9+ cumulative GPA
- Academic Probation — falls below 2.0 cumulative GPA
Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA is required to graduate. Students on probation for two consecutive semesters face academic dismissal.
Other US universities with similar grading
IU's 4.0 plus/minus scale is one of the most common US systems. Compare with:
- UCLA and UC Berkeley — identical scale (A+ = A = 4.0)
- Michigan State — A+ = 4.33 (the opposite approach)
- Rutgers — half-point increments (B+ = 3.5), no minus
- UW — numerical system with B+ = 3.4

Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does Indiana University use?+
IU uses a 4.0 scale with full plus/minus grading. A+ is worth 4.0 (same as A), not 4.33. The scale ranges from A+/A=4.0 down to D-=0.7, with F=0.0.
Does A+ give extra GPA points at IU?+
No. At IU, an A+ is worth 4.0 grade points — the same as a regular A. The A+ notation appears on your transcript but does not increase your GPA beyond 4.0.
What is a passing grade at IU?+
A D- (0.7) is the lowest passing grade for undergraduate courses at IU. However, many degree programs require a C- or higher in major-specific courses.
How does IU calculate GPA?+
IU calculates GPA by dividing total Credit Points by total GPA Hours. Semester GPA uses only courses from that term; cumulative GPA includes all graded courses taken at IU.
Do S/F (pass/fail) courses affect my IU GPA?+
No. S (Satisfactory) and P (Pass) grades are not included in GPA calculations. However, an F grade in a pass/fail course does count as 0.0 grade points and is included in GPA hours.
