About the UMD GPA Scale
The University of Maryland uses a 4.0 GPA scale with full plus/minus grading in 0.3-point increments. The key thing to know: A+ = A = 4.0 at UMD. An A+ does not boost your GPA beyond 4.0, unlike schools such as Michigan State or UBC where A+ is worth 4.33.
The full letter-to-point table runs from A+/A (4.0) down to D− (0.7), with F at 0.0. The lowest passing grade is D−. Compare with the general US system on our US grading guide.

How UMD GPA is calculated
UMD GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade points. The formula is:
GPA = Σ (grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours
Each course contributes grade points × credit hours. A 4-credit lecture graded 3.7 contributes 14.8 quality points; a 3-credit seminar graded 3.3 contributes 9.9. Pass/Fail (P/F) courses add credit hours but no grade points and are excluded from GPA. Transfer credits and AP credit appear on the transcript but do not count toward UMD's GPA.
UMD academic standing & honors
UMD's Latin honors thresholds are set on cumulative GPA at graduation:
- Summa Cum Laude — 3.9+ GPA
- Magna Cum Laude — 3.7+ GPA
- Cum Laude — 3.5+ GPA
Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA is required to remain in good standing and to graduate. Students who fall below 2.0 are placed on academic probation; below 1.5 for two consecutive semesters leads to dismissal.
Other US universities with similar grading
UMD uses a fairly standard 4.0 scale. Compare with:
- UCLA and UC Berkeley — identical scale (A+ = A = 4.0)
- Michigan State — A+ = 4.33 (the opposite approach)
- Rutgers — half-point increments (B+ = 3.5), no minus
- UW — numerical system with B+ = 3.4

Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does University of Maryland use?+
UMD uses a 4.0 scale with full plus/minus grading. Note that A+ is worth 4.0 (same as A), not 4.33. The scale ranges from A+/A=4.0 down to D-=0.7, with F=0.0.
Does A+ give extra GPA points at UMD?+
No. At UMD, an A+ is worth 4.0 quality points — the same as a regular A. The A+ is a notation on your transcript but does not boost your GPA beyond 4.0.
What is a passing grade at UMD?+
A D- (0.7) is the lowest passing grade for undergraduate courses. However, many degree programs require a C- or higher in major-specific courses.
How does UMD handle repeated courses?+
UMD's repeat policy allows the most recent grade to replace the earlier one in GPA calculations under certain conditions (within the first 24 credit hours or first semester). All attempts remain on the transcript.
Do transfer credits affect my UMD GPA?+
No. Transfer credits and prior learning credits are recorded on your transcript but are never calculated into your UMD cumulative GPA. Only UMD courses count.
