About the U of A GPA Scale
The University of Alberta uses a 4.0 GPA scale with full +/- refinement. Key features: A+ and A both carry 4.0 grade points (the A+ is a transcript distinction only), and there is no D- grade — the lowest passing grade is D at 1.0. U of A also uses F4 for failed courses where a supplemental exam is available.
U of A transitioned from a 9-point grading system to the current 4.0 alpha scale in September 2003. Students enrolled before 2003 may still have grades on the old scale on their transcripts. Compare with other Canadian universities below.

How U of A GPA is calculated
U of A GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade point values. The formula is:
GPA = sum of (grade point value x course hours) / sum of course hours
Courses with non-numeric grades — such as CR/NC (Credit/No Credit), IN (Incomplete), or AUD (Audited) — are excluded from the GPA calculation. F4 grades (failure with supplemental exam eligibility) count as 0.0 toward your GPA.
