About the McGill GPA Scale
McGill University uses a 4.0 GPA scale with a limited grade set. The most distinctive features: no A+ (the highest grade is A at 4.0), and no C-, D+, or D- grades. Below C+, the next step is D (1.0), then F (0.0). This is simpler than most US or Canadian schools.
Critically, all final grades count in your CGPA, even after repeating a course. If you fail a course and retake it, both the F and the new grade appear in your CGPA. Only the credits count once. Compare with other Canadian universities below.
| Letter Grade | Grade Points | Percentage Range |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | 85-100% (highest grade — no A+ at McGill) |
| A- | 3.7 | 80-84% |
| B+ | 3.3 | 75-79% |
| B | 3.0 | 70-74% |
| B- | 2.7 | 65-69% |
| C+ | 2.3 | 60-64% |
| C | 2.0 | 55-59% |
| D | 1.0 | 50-54% (single passing grade below C+) |
| F | 0.0 | 0-49% (failure) |

How McGill GPA is calculated
McGill GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade points. The formula is:
GPA = sum of (grade points x GPA credits) / sum of GPA credits
McGill calculates both a Term GPA (TGPA) for each semester and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) across all terms. Unlike some universities, McGill does not round the GPA — the exact value is reported. All final grades count in the CGPA, even after repeating a course.
