Monash University GPA Calculator
Calculate your Monash GPA using the official grading scale. HD = 80% at Monash — lower than the 85% HD threshold at Melbourne, Sydney, and UNSW. A 82% student gets HD at Monash but only DI/D at other schools. No +/- within grade bands.

About the Monash Grading System
Monash University uses a 4.0 GPA scale on a 5-band system: HD (80-100%) = 4.0, D (70-79%) = 3.0, C (60-69%) = 2.0, P (50-59%) = 1.0, N (below 50%) = 0.0. There are no +/- variations within each band — a 65% and a 69% are both C at 2.0.
The most notable quirk: Monash's HD threshold is 80%, while most other Australian universities (Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW, UQ) use 85%. This means the same numeric score earns different grade labels at different universities. Monash also calculates a WAM (Weighted Average Mark) separately, which uses actual marks and weights first-year courses at 0.5.
| Grade | Grade Points | Mark Range |
|---|---|---|
| HD | 4.0 | 80-100% (lowest HD threshold in Australia) |
| D | 3.0 | 70-79% |
| C | 2.0 | 60-69% |
| P | 1.0 | 50-59% (minimum passing) |
| N | 0.0 | 0-49% (fail, included in GPA) |
Source: Monash Official Grading Policy. WAM is calculated separately using numeric marks with first-year units at 0.5 weight.
How Monash GPA is calculated
Monash GPA is the credit-weighted average of your grade point values. The formula is:
GPA = sum of (grade points x credit points) / sum of credit points
Failed courses (N) carry 0.0 grade points and are fully included in the GPA denominator — a single N can significantly lower your GPA. Note that Monash's WAM uses actual numeric marks (not grade bands) with first-year units weighted at 0.5, making WAM more precise than GPA for academic planning.
HD threshold comparison across Australian universities
Monash's 80% HD threshold is notably lower than most other Australian universities. Here's how it compares:
- Monash — HD at 80%
- University of Melbourne — H1 at 80% (on 7-point scale)
- University of Sydney — HD at 85%
- UNSW Sydney — HD at 85%
- UQ — HD (7) at 85%
Other Australian university calculators
Most Australian universities use WAM rather than GPA. Compare with:
- University of Melbourne — 7.0 GPA (H1/H2A/H2B) + WAM, HD at 80%
- University of Sydney — WAM-only, HD at 85%, USyd explicitly "does not use GPA"
- UNSW Sydney — WAM-only, HD at 85%
- UQ — 7-point numbered grades (7=HD at 85%)

Frequently Asked Questions
What GPA scale does Monash University use?+
Monash uses a 4.0 GPA scale: HD (High Distinction, 80-100%) = 4.0, D (Distinction, 70-79%) = 3.0, C (Credit, 60-69%) = 2.0, P (Pass, 50-59%) = 1.0, N (Fail, below 50%) = 0.0. This is simpler than most US GPA scales — there are no plus/minus grade points.
What is the difference between GPA and WAM at Monash?+
Monash uses both GPA and WAM. GPA is on a 4.0 scale based on grade bands. WAM (Weighted Average Mark) uses your actual numeric marks with first-year units weighted at 0.5 and later-year units at 1.0. WAM is more precise because it distinguishes between a 71% and 79% (both are D on GPA, but very different on WAM).
What is the HD threshold at Monash?+
Monash's High Distinction threshold is 80% — lower than the 85% used by most other Australian universities. This means a student scoring 82% earns HD at Monash but only Distinction at Melbourne, Sydney, or UNSW.
What is a passing grade at Monash?+
A Pass (P, 50-59%) is the minimum passing grade. To graduate, you must achieve a minimum GPA of 1.0 (equivalent to a Pass average).
Are failed courses included in Monash GPA?+
Yes. Failed courses (N, below 50%) carry 0.0 grade points and are included in the GPA calculation. This means a failed course will significantly lower your GPA.
