About the Cambridge Classification System

The University of Cambridge uses the UK degree classification system, not GPA. Degrees are awarded in bands: First (70%+), Upper Second/2:1 (60–69%), Lower Second/2:2 (50–59%), and Third (40–49%). Cambridge does not issue numeric GPA.

Cambridge's examination system is based on the tripos — named examinations in specific subjects (Mathematical Tripos, Natural Sciences Tripos, etc.). Each tripos splits into parts (Part I, Part II, Part III), and students can achieve a different class in each part. A double First (First in two parts) is a significant distinction. Since October 2020, Cambridge also awards a single final class. See our UK degree classification guide.

The Cambridge tripos & Wrangler tradition

The Mathematical Tripos has a unique tradition: the top First is the Senior Wrangler (since 1748). Past Senior Wranglers include Lord Rayleigh, J.J. Thomson, and John Maynard Keynes. The 'Wooden Spoon' (last place in the Third Class) was discontinued in 1909. This tradition is unique to Cambridge.

For most US graduate applications, a Cambridge 2:1 is considered equivalent to 3.3–3.7 GPA. The exact conversion depends on the evaluating service (WES, ECE, Scholaro each differ slightly).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Cambridge University use GPA?+

No. Cambridge uses the UK degree classification system, not GPA. The Cambridge tripos system splits examinations into parts (Part I, Part II, Part III), each spanning one or two years. Students can achieve a different class in each part. A 'double First' (First in two parts) is a significant academic distinction. Since October 2020, Cambridge also awards a single final class across the full course.

What is a 'double First' at Cambridge?+

A double First means achieving a First Class in two separate parts of the Cambridge tripos (e.g., Part I and Part II). This is a notable achievement. The Cambridge tripos system is unique — each subject has its own named tripos (Mathematical Tripos, Natural Sciences Tripos, etc.), and performance in each part is classified separately.

What is a Cambridge First in US GPA?+

Using the standard Fulbright Commission conversion: a Cambridge First = 4.0 GPA. A strong 2:1 (65-69%) = 3.7 GPA, and a standard 2:1 (60-64%) = 3.3 GPA. Cambridge's own graduate admissions uses similar thresholds.

What GPA do I need to get into Cambridge as a graduate student?+

Cambridge requires a minimum 3.5 GPA for courses requiring a 2:1, and a minimum 3.7 GPA for courses requiring a First, for US applicants. For other countries, Cambridge publishes detailed country-specific equivalences on its graduate admissions website.

What is the Senior Wrangler at Cambridge?+

The Senior Wrangler is the top First in the Mathematical Tripos — a historic academic honour dating back to 1748. Past Senior Wranglers include Lord Rayleigh, J.J. Thomson, and John Maynard Keynes. The 'Wooden Spoon' was the last place in the Third Class (discontinued 1909). This tradition is unique to Cambridge and has no equivalent at Oxford or any other university.
