10-Point CGPA to 4.0 GPA
Most of the world grades on a 10-point scale; the US grades on 4.0. The standard conversion is one line of arithmetic: GPA = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4. An 8.5 CGPA becomes a 3.4 GPA. Below: the full lookup table, the 12-point variant, the CBSE percentage formula, and when evaluators like WES use different numbers.

The formula
US GPA = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4
Example: your transcript says 8.7 CGPA.
(8.7 ÷ 10) × 4 = 3.48 → 3.5 GPA (rounded to one decimal).
Conversion table
| 10-point CGPA | US GPA (4.0) | Approx. US letter |
|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | 4.0 | A |
| 9.5 | 3.8 | A− |
| 9.0 | 3.6 | A− |
| 8.5 | 3.4 | B+ |
| 8.0 | 3.2 | B+ |
| 7.5 | 3.0 | B |
| 7.0 | 2.8 | B− |
| 6.5 | 2.6 | B− |
| 6.0 | 2.4 | C+ |
| 5.5 | 2.2 | C |
| 5.0 | 2.0 | C |
| 4.0 | 1.6 | C− |

Going the other way: GPA to 10-point CGPA
CGPA = (GPA ÷ 4) × 10
- 3.8 GPA → 9.5 CGPA
- 3.5 GPA → 8.75 CGPA
- 3.0 GPA → 7.5 CGPA
- 2.5 GPA → 6.25 CGPA
12-point scales (and other maxima)
A few universities grade on 12-point scales (and some on 5, 6, 7 or 9). The same proportional logic applies — divide by the maximum, multiply by 4:
GPA = (CGPA ÷ max scale) × 4
| Your scale | Example CGPA | Calculation | US GPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12-point | 10.0 | (10 ÷ 12) × 4 | 3.33 |
| 12-point | 9.0 | (9 ÷ 12) × 4 | 3.0 |
| 9-point | 8.0 | (8 ÷ 9) × 4 | 3.56 |
| 7-point | 6.0 | (6 ÷ 7) × 4 | 3.43 |
| 5-point | 4.5 | (4.5 ÷ 5) × 4 | 3.6 |
⚠️ Caveat: if your university publishes its own conversion table, use theirs. Some scales aren't linear — a 5/7 might already mean "excellent" on that institution's rubric, and proportional math would understate it.
CGPA to percentage (the CBSE 9.5 formula)
Indian boards and many universities ask for percentage equivalents. The standard CBSE/UGC formula:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
| CGPA | Percentage |
|---|---|
| 10.0 | 95.0% |
| 9.0 | 85.5% |
| 8.5 | 80.75% |
| 8.0 | 76.0% |
| 7.5 | 71.25% |
| 7.0 | 66.5% |
| 6.0 | 57.0% |
Note that some institutions use different divisors (e.g., Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10). Always use the formula printed on your own transcript or university handbook. Full university-by-university formulas are in ourCGPA to Percentage guide, and theCGPA to Percentage Calculator has all 8 formulas built in.
When evaluators use different numbers
WES, ECE and similar credential evaluators don't always apply the linear formula. They map your institution's grade bands to US letter grades — so an 8.5/10 that your university classifies as "First Division with Distinction" might evaluate to an A (4.0) rather than 3.4. If your GPA matters for a visa, graduate application, or job background check, request an official evaluation rather than relying on proportional math.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a 10-point CGPA to a 4.0 GPA?+
The standard proportional formula is: GPA = (CGPA ÷ 10) × 4. So an 8.5 CGPA becomes (8.5 ÷ 10) × 4 = 3.4 GPA. Most US universities and evaluators accept this as a first approximation — but for official applications, check whether the institution or evaluator (e.g., WES) uses its own grade-band table, which can differ.
What does a 10 CGPA mean?+
A 10.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale is a perfect score — the equivalent of straight A+ grades, or 100% marks. In percentage terms (CBSE formula), 10 × 9.5 = 95%. On the US 4.0 scale it converts to a 4.0 GPA.
What is 7.5 CGPA in percentage and GPA?+
Using the CBSE 9.5 formula: 7.5 × 9.5 = 71.25%. Using the proportional US conversion: (7.5 ÷ 10) × 4 = 3.0 GPA. 7.5 is one of the most-searched CGPA values — it typically represents a solid B+/First Division record.
How do I convert a 12-point GPA to a 4.0 scale?+
Use the same proportional method with 12 as the divisor: GPA = (CGPA ÷ 12) × 4. A 10.0 on a 12-point scale becomes (10 ÷ 12) × 4 = 3.33. Some universities using 12-point scales publish their own conversion tables — use those when available, since the grade bands may not be evenly spaced.
What percentage is a 2.8 GPA?+
On the standard US scale, a 2.8 GPA falls between B− (2.7, 80–82%) and B (3.0, 83–86%) — so roughly 82%. If converting from a 10-point scale, 2.8 GPA = 7.0 CGPA. Conversions in the other direction (percentage to GPA) depend on which table your school uses; see our percentage-to-GPA guide.
Is the CBSE 9.5 formula the same as a GPA conversion?+
No — they answer different questions. The CBSE formula (Percentage = CGPA × 9.5) converts a 10-point CGPA to a board percentage for Indian transcripts. The GPA conversion ((CGPA ÷ 10) × 4) translates that CGPA to the US 4.0 scale. For US applications you often need both steps: CGPA → percentage → US GPA using the school's table.
