Exam Grade Calculation
From the moment you put your pen down to the letter grade on your transcript, your raw marks go through a few transformations. Here's how each step works — and where curves, weighting, and rubrics change the picture.
The basic formula
The simplest exam-to-grade conversion is:
percentage = (points you scored ÷ total points available) × 100
That percentage is then mapped to a letter using your school's cut-offs. Most US schools use something close to the standard 90 / 80 / 70 / 60 table, but the exact cut-offs vary by course and instructor.

Weighted finals: where the math gets interesting
Most courses weight the final exam as a fixed percentage of your overall course grade. A typical syllabus might say "final = 40% of grade." That means your exam score doesn't directly become your transcript grade — it gets combined with your coursework.

Example: 85% on the final (worth 40%) and 78% coursework average →85 × 0.40 + 78 × 0.60 = 34 + 46.8 = 80.8%, a B− on the standard table.
What "the curve" actually means
When an instructor says they'll "curve the grades," they usually mean one of these:
- Add a fixed number of points to every student's score (e.g. +5 to everyone).
- Scale the top so the highest score equals a fixed cap (e.g. 100).
- Shift the mean to a target (e.g. class average → 75).
- Adjust letter cut-offs after seeing the distribution (e.g. 82% becomes the new A− cut-off).
Curves usually push grades up, but they can also push them down if the class performed far above the target. They're instructor discretion, so don't count on one unless the syllabus explicitly says so.
Why the same percentage doesn't always mean the same grade
Three big reasons:
- Different cut-offs — your chemistry class might require 88% for an A; your English class might require 92%.
- Rubrics and partial credit — a math problem is graded on correctness; an essay gets partial credit on a rubric, which often rewards good arguments even when execution is rough.
- Curves and adjustments — your instructor's policies on extra credit, late penalties, and class-wide adjustments all change the final number.
The only number that really counts is the one on your transcript — not the one you scored on the paper.
