Missed Your University Offer? What to Do
Missed your university offer after A-Level results? Your firm choice rejected you, your insurance fell through, or you're staring at a 'Clearing' status in UCAS Hub. Here's exactly what to do — phone scripts, timelines, and every option on the table.

First: check your UCAS Hub — don't assume the worst
Before you do anything else, open UCAS Hub. Your status determines everything:
- Unconditional (firm) — you're in. The university accepted you regardless of grades. Celebrate.
- Conditional (firm) — the university hasn't decided yet. Call them. Many universities accept near-miss candidates on results day.
- Unsuccessful (firm) — your firm rejected you. Move to your insurance or Clearing.
- Unconditional (insurance) — you're in at your insurance choice. You have a university place.
- Clearing — you're in Clearing. The UCAS vacancy list is your next stop.
If your firm still shows as Conditional
This is the most common situation. The university is still reviewing your application. Call the admissions office directly. Phone script:
"Hi, I'm [name], my UCAS Personal ID is [ID]. I'm calling about my application for [course]. My offer was [offer grades] and I got [actual grades]. Is there any update on my application?"
The admissions officer will tell you one of three things: (1) you've been accepted (update your Hub), (2) they're still reviewing (wait and call back), or (3) you've been rejected (move to Clearing).
If your firm rejected you: the Clearing decision tree
Step 1: Check your insurance choice
If your insurance still shows as available, and you missed your firm offer but met your insurance offer, you'll likely be accepted by your insurance. Call them to confirm.
Step 2: UCAS Clearing — the full process
Clearing matches you with unfilled university places. Over 50,000 students find places through Clearing each year. Here's the exact process:
- Your UCAS Hub will show your Clearing number — write it down.
- Go to the UCAS Clearing vacancy search (ucas.com). This is the only official list — don't use third-party aggregators.
- Search by subject, university, or location. Note the university name, course code, and entry requirements.
- Call the university's Clearing hotline. Have your Clearing number and Personal ID ready. Use the phone script above.
- If the university gives you a verbal offer and you accept, click"Add Clearing Choice" in UCAS Hub and fill in the course details. You must do this by the deadline the university gives you.
- You can only hold one Clearing choice at a time. If the university doesn't confirm, you can add a different one.
Important: Clearing is not a last resort. Only about 24% of Clearing users in 2024 had missed their grades. The majority use it strategically. Don't let the word "Clearing" make you feel like you've failed — it's a matching system, not a penalty.
Step 3: If Clearing doesn't work
Three options remain:
- Resit your A-Levels — May/June 2027, reapply with improved grades. This is the most common route for students who missed their offer by more than one grade.
- Degree apprenticeship — search the government's apprenticeship website (findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk) for degree-level vacancies.
- Gap year with a plan — work, travel, reapply. If you're resitting, your gap year has a clear purpose. If you're not resitting, your personal statement needs to explain what you did with the year.
What about appealing your grades?
If you were one or two marks below the grade boundary for a subject that your university offer depended on, a review of marking could change your grade. This takes a few weeks — ask your school's exams officer on results day. A priority review is available if you have a university place depending on the result.
